There has been considerable research inquiry into the causes and the nature of differences in growth rates across countries and regions over time. Even small differences in these growth rates, if cumulated over a long period of time, may have a substantial impact on the living standards of people. Despite considerable research on the subject, cross-country and cross-regional income disparities are on the rise over time. Understanding the causes behind such inequalities is essential to formulate appropriate policies and bring about required institutional changes, in order to spread the benefits of growth processes across regions. The book recommends policies based on theoretical and empirical exercises, which can help some of the South and East Asian nations to catch up with their richer counterparts and simultaneously work out the speed of convergence/divergence from 1960 onwards. Estimates of Technical Efficiency are worked out and Growth Accounting is done for some countries in the South and East Asian regions, including Indian States and Union Territories using the mathematical technique of Data Envelopment Technique.
