Throughout history the poor have been considered to be some sort of groups on the fringes of the society and for which the society has had to care for. Poverty, and the poor, has been often sometimes by structural factors. Regardless of whether one relates poverty to individual or structural factors, it remains related to the fundamental problems of allocation and distribution that economic theory deals with. Many path-breaking works by economists since Adam smith have dealt with the attempted to analyse different aspects related to poverty. The present volume describes and critically examines how selected economists, representing different strands of economic theory, explain the causes of and the cures for poverty.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Carl-Axel Olsson
Carl-Axel Olsson is professor, Department of Economic History, Lund University, Sweden. His main research interests are in the history of economic thought and questions of methodology especially concerning the borderline between economics and history. His book “Alfred Marshall and Economic History†(Lund 1991) is one example. He is currently working on a study titled “the Cobweb Theorem, Equilibrium and Counter-finality.â€
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Daniel Rauhut
Deniel Rauhut received his Ph.D. in Economic History from Lund University, Sweden, in 2002. His doctoral thesis analysed the poverty norm in Sweden 1918-1997. Rauhut is currently a senior research fellow at the Swedish Institute for Growth Policy Studies, where his work mainly has dealt with issues regarding welfare, the labour market, migration and demographic effects on the economy.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Neelambar Hatti
Neelambar Hatti is mainly involved in research at the Department of Economic History, University of Lund, Sweden. Dr. Hatti has written extensively on Trade, Aid and Rural Development, and Microdemography. He has also taught at the University of Copenhagen and has been a visiting Senior Fellow at the Scandinavian Institute of Asian Studies. He has recently authored (with Rameshwar Tandon) the study, Exports and Development: The Indian Experience.
