The theme deals with the development of education from the early period to the modern era. The concept of education witnessed several changes with the dawn of societal socio-economic needs and these needs were fulfilled from time to time with a kind of new orientation to the educational system. Undoubtedly the work of development was taken up both at governmental and non-governmental level. Whereas the former showed pioneering work with the assistance and planning of various commissions which gave their reports in consideration of the changing demands by the youths of the country. The latter having linkage with the social demands did care for the rapid growth of education in towns and rural areas. The targets to be achieved were fixed, but much is yet to be realised for the social and moral development of our youths in the changing circumstances.
