Successful conferences between parents and school people grow out of an understanding of factors important in the development of children. Parents and teachers are mutually concerned about helping the child to learn the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to successful living. They are mutually concerned about helping the child to grow up to be a socially and emotionally mature person. Concerned thus with common purposes, the social distance they frequently maintain between them should be reduced to a minimum. When fears of either parents or teachers intrude, conferences suffer. But when common goals of family and school are emphasized and the conference is kept centered on the good of the child, much is accomplished to further the development of the child.
