To understand the magentic and spectal properities of the transition metal complexes, one ought to know the origin, nature and classification of the spectal lines of atoms and the spectra of complex ions. The purpose of this book is to familiarise students with the concepts, methods and applications of Cystal Field Theory (CFT) as well as Ligand Field Theory (LFT) to a point where the literature on the subject can be followed without much difficulty. The necessary mathematical techiques associated with atomic spectroscopy and related matters are developed. Large number of tables and clear-cut diagrams and figures throughout enhance the value of the highly readable text. Suitable advanced reading is suggested in the bibliography at the end of each chapter. Problems of varying degree of diffculty are included after certain vhapters to provide practice in the methods of CFT and LFT. This book may be used for self-study and cover Inorganic Electronic Spectroscopy course at the master degree level and beyond.
