The book includes the biographies and contributions of 75 eminent Indian Botanists and explains the foundations of Botany in India and its development from 16th century into modern times. The biographies mentioned herein include those plant explorers of the East India Company like Garcia d’Orta, Hendrik A. Van Rheede and H. F. C. Cleghorn who laid the foundations to Tropical Medical Botany. This also includes the biographies of the scientists of British India like E. Blatter, E.J. Butler, George Bentham, J. Dalton Hooker, N. Wallich, R. H. Beddome, Robert Wight, W. Dudgeon and W. Roxburgh who were responsible for the establishment of many botanic gardens, herbaria and research institutes in India and also worked for the development of Botany in the sub-continent. The biographies of eminent Indian-born American Botanists such as Govindjee and I. K. Vasil are also included. The book includes the biographies of deceased Indian Plant Scientitsts like B.G.L. SWamy, Birbal Sahni, B.M. Johri, E. K. Janaki Ammal, H. Santapau, J. C. Bose, J. Venkateswarlu, P. Maheshwari, M.J. Thirumalachar, M.O.P. Iyengar, Shri Ranjan, Sipra Guhu Mukherjee, T.N. Khoshoo, T.V. Desikachary and y.S. Murthy whose contributions are in different sub-disciplines of Botany and each one is famous in his own discipline. The biographies of Botanists of international eminence like M.S. Swaminathan and k.S. Manilal also find a place in the book. On the whole, the book is one place wherein one can find almost all important contributions made in Botany from time to time, and it is a must for every university college library, research laboratory and an institution where botany is being taught. ABOUT THE AUTHOR P. Suresh Narayana
P. Suresh Narayana obtained his M.Sc. degree (1971) in Botany from Sri Venkateswara Uinversity. Later, he joined the department of Botany, S.S.B. N. Junior College, Anantpur, in 1971 and served the Institution for more than 37 years. He rose to become the Principal of the same Institution (2006). He took active interest in popularizing Botany among college and High School students. Many a time he participated in District Science Fairs and Children’s Science Congresses as an adjudicator and encouraged the students to develop the scientific temper. He participated in several National Symposia in Botany, Environmental Sciences and Biotechnology. He gave many Radio and T.V. talks on plants, environment and biotechnology over All India Radio. He actively participates in the social activities participates in the social activities among the elite of Anantpur. He is a member of a few scientific societies of India. He also organized a couple of National Symposia in Plant Sciences and Biotechnology Quiz programmes and elocution and Essay Writing Competitions. During his tenure as Principal, he established the NSS unit in the College and conducted many programmes such as ‘Clean and Green Planting’ and ‘Environmental Awareness’. He conducted many botanical tours and accompanied students for collections. His hobbies include reading, correspondence, photography and collection of books and stamps. He is also an Executive Member of a few local educational institutions and oeganizations.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR T Pullaiah
Prof. T Pullah obtained his M.Sc. (1971) and Ph.D. degrees in Botany from Andhra University. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Moscow State University, Russia, during 1976-1978. He traveled widely in Europe and visited Universities and Botanic Gardens in about 16 countries. He joined Sri Krishnadevaraya University as Lecturer in 1979 and became Professor in 1993. He held several positions in the University as Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, Head, Department of Botany; Chairman, Board of Studies in Botany; Head, Department of Sericulture; Co-ordinator and Chairman, Board of Studies in Biotechnology; Principal, S K University College and Warden, S K, University Hostels. He has published 43 books, 238 research papers and 35 popular articles in Journals of repute. He is the Principal – Investigator of 20 major Research Projects totaling more than a Crore of Rupees funded by DBT, DST, CSIR, UGC, BSI, WWF, GCC, BARC etc. Under his guidance, 45 students obtained their Ph.D. degrees and 34 students their M.Phil. degrees. He is the recipient of Best Teacher Award from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Prof. P Maheshwari Gold Medal of the Indian Association for Angiosperm Taxanomy. He served as the Vice President of the Indian Botanical Society and presently the Councilor of the same. He served as a member of Species Survival commission of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
