‘Gender Equality’ is much debated issue in almost all the countries of the world. It is more relevant in the context of developing countries where maltreatment and exploitation of women has been tradition which goes on unabated. In India women’s condition are deplorable. The foeticide of girls is becoming a frequent phenomenon. As such gender-ratio has dwindled badly. Whether in tribal, poor or rich families women are worst sufferers. Though, we may boast of having women President, Prime Minister or Chief Minister. The Country Programme (2003-2007) of UNDP has identified "Promotion of Human Development and Gender Equality" as one of the priority areas. UNDP for the current county programme has attempted to ensure that gender concerns are addressed across all its project activities and has also designed a dedicated project, "Promoting Gender Equality". This project will be executed by the Department of Women and Child Development (DWCD), Ministry of Human Development, Government of India. This Encyclopaedic work, in two parts, encompasses vital information on the problem of gender equality and allied issues. Based on authentic information, gathered from various authoritative sources and supported by facts and figures, this has become a veritable mine of information.
