Most countries of the world have consistently and uniformly asserted that only voluntary negotiation, arbitration and/or adjudication can be the rule of law. The main source of international law at present is the treaty. This proposition fully accords with international practice. Suffice it to say that both the UN Charter and the Statute of the International Court of Justice also consider the treaty, the main source of international law. Unlike the treaty, the customary rule of international law embodies to tacit agreement of states. For historical reasons, custom predominated in the past. In the last century the situation has changed and it has been relegated to second place by the treaty. However, the rules of customary law continue to play a very big role in the practice of international law. The principles, practices, customs and conventions of international law have been profiled in the present collection of articles, papers, essays, excerpts and abstracts. These materials have been drawn from a variety of sources, both published and unpublished, and the consistent attempt has been to provide the reader and scholar of international law, the most elementary yet studied background of the very basis of comity of nations. Judiciously selected authentic/authoritative information is categorically organised in eight volumes namely, Global Issues in International Law; International Law and State Sovereignty; Citizen and State; Basic Approaches in International Law; Protection of Diplomatic Personnel; Conflicts and Conventions in Law of the Sea; Conventions and Practices in Trade and Commerce; Dynamics of Law and Legality; and International Law and Political Change. This encyclopaedia will prove most useful reference tool not only for law practitioners and Judges and Judicial administrators but also for researchers and academics in the fields concerned.
