Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Literary Criticism

In this encyclopaedia, the editor attempted to interpret ‘critic’ as "one who has made a valuable contribution to literary criticism" rather than "one who has undertaken a profession of criticism". This encyclopaedia is mainly for study rather than for reading. This makes the student to think about the ideas he has read and to disallow him from swallowing them as whole. While compiling this encyclopaedia, the editor has kept before him the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate students of English literature who desire to know about the general aspects of literary criticism which will furnish a good basis for the serious study of literary criticism and which can be read with happiness by those who know but little of the history of literature.
