The international society of environmental biotechnology defines environmental biotechnology as "the development, use and regulation of biological systems for remediation of contaminated environments (land, air, water) and for environment-friendly process (green manufacturing technologies and sustainable development)". It is the multidisciplinary integration of sciences and engineering in order to utilize the huge biochemical potential of microorganisms, plants and parts thereof for restoration and preservation of the environment and for the sustainable use of resources.
