The book comprises selected critical reviews and specific case-studies dealing with environmental fallouts of mining, mineral-processing and mineral-based industries and possible remedial measures aimed at recuperation and preservation of the surrounding environment in the Indian context. The subject has received considerable attention in recent years in the wake of unprecedented growth and expansion of mining and mineral-based industries and increasing public apprehensions regarding its or reversible impacts on the ecology, environment and the socio-economic, traditional and cultural fabric of the populace in the affected regions. In-depth discussions on this subject had constituted the main theme of a national symposium organized by Indian School of Mines – the premier institution of Mining and Mineral Sciences in the country – on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The volume comprises selected contributions made to this symposium by distinguished geo-scientists, mining and mineral engineers and few invited papers by eminent authorities of the subject in the country. The volume concludes with the recommendations of the symposium, aptly summarizing the outcome of its prolonged deliberations.
