While civilization has enabled mankind to improve the quality of life, simultaneously it has posed problems such as management of environment degradation. Abattoirs, which provide hygienic meat as well as employment to millions, become a source of massive amount of wastes such as rumen ingesta, the undigested cellulosic wastes. With urbanization and reorganisation of slaughterhouses in the vicinity of towns, these wastes remain unutilized. These are used as landfill, incinerated or released into watercourses. In this study the author suggests recycling of these wastes into a high protein fodder. Submerged and solid state fermentations of the wastes using a combination of cellulolytic bacterial and fungal strains have been discussed. A pilot study of the nutritive and toxicological evaluation of the product provides a base to further research and scale-up studies for making such a project economically viable. These attempts would fulfill two longstanding needs, one of the pollution abatement and the other of a low-cost unconventional protein feed for animals.
