ABOUT THE AUTHOR E.W. Washburn Hopkins

Edward Washburn Hopkins (1857-1932) studied Sanskrit in the Universities of Northampton, Massachusetts, Columbia, Leipzig and Berlin. On the completion of his academic career, he took up to teaching Sanskrit in the University of Columbia. From 1895 to 1926, he occupied the Professorial Chair of Sanskrit in the University of Yale. He was the editor of Journal of American Oriental Society for a number of years. He was elected President of American Oriental Society for two terms (1908-09 and 1922-23). Professor Hopkins occupied a conspicuous place among the Western Indologists. His major works include : The Great Epic of India, Religions of India, Ethics of India, Legends of India, The Four Castes and Ordinances of Manu.
