This book deals with the origin and development of what later evolved into important Hindu sects. It traces the history of these theistic sects of ancient India from the earliest period to the time of the great religious reformer Samkaracarya. This book is based on available materials, both Indian and foreign, literary as well as archaeological. Reference to mythological accounts has been made only to a limited extent, insofar as it has been found necessary for tracing the history of the sects.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sudhakar Chattopadhyaya
Dr. Sudhakar Chattopadhyaya is a prominent name among Indian historians. His academic profundity won him Premchand Roychand scholarship from Calcutta University in 1953. In the same year he was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Ancient Indian History and Culture at the Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan. His published works include Early History of North India, Traditional Values in Indian Life, Evolution of Hindu Sects up to the time of Samkaracarya and Racial Affinities of Early North Indian Tribes.
