In this book the author examines and discusses some of the important facets of South Indian music notation. The notational scheme has been introduced in this treatise, Sangita Sampradaya Pradarsini (1904) (adopted in a modern work, Syama Sastri’s Compositions) being of overwhelming relevance to the present discussion and has been discussed in length and breadth. The incorporated suggestions for implementing the notation as an aid for learning music in the modern academic context has been discussed in the last pages of this treatise. The present treatise Facets of Notation in South Indian Music originally formed the contents of a Ph.D. thesis submitted by the author to the University of Mysore under the title Development of Notation in Karnatic Music.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sharada Gopalam

Dr. Sharada Gopalan received her Post-graduate degree in 'Carnatic Music' from the University of Delhi. The credit of Dr. Gopalam's grounding in music goes to her revered mother Late Smt. Vasanta Gopalam and Professor V.V. Sadagopan. Dr. Gopalam also received training in music under the tutelege of Sri. T.R. Subrahmanyam, besides she had the privelege of learning music from Sri. N. Gopalam Ayyar and Sri. S. Sethuraman of Delhi. Currently she is working as a Senior Lecturer in Sri. Satguru Sangeeta Vidylayam (College of Music) in Madurai.
