Fettered Freedom comprises eighteen articles written Mr. Zamir Niazi. Author of Press in Chains, The Press under Siege and The Web of Censorship, Zamir Niazi wrote extensively on the condition of Pakistani Press, successive governments’ policies towards the Press, the difficult circumstances under which the Press in Pakistan had to survive, working journalists’ struggle for Press freedom, the values and traditions of journalism in South Asia and the contemporary technological developments in the print media. Mr. Niazi always took a very objective view of the past and the present and was quite critical of whoever curbed the freedom of the Press or compromised on it. His writings are an excellent portrayal of the state and the role of Press in Pakistan. This book had in fact been planned by Mr. Zamir Niazi himself who wanted to compile all his writings on journalism and Press in one volume. The title of this book was also chosen by him. However, his death left this project incomplete. The editor of the present volume has compiled these articles from the files meticulously and methodically arranged by Mr. Zamir Niazi.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Zamir Niazi

The author of this book, late Mr. Zamir Niazi, began his career in journalism from the daily Inqilab (Bombay). After Partition, he stayed in India for a few years. In 1953 he migrated to Pakistan and joined Urdu daily Nai Roshni. He joined Dawn in 1954 and served it till 1962 as a sub-editor. Between 1962 and 1965, he was the chief sub-editor and editorial writer in Karachi’s Daily News. He then moved to the Business Recorder in 1965 and retired from there in 1992 as Magazine Incharge. Apart from these, Mr. Niazi also served as editor of monthly Recorder and weekly Current for brief periods. His first book on journalism, Press in Chains, was published in 1986. It became a best seller soon after its publication and ran into a number of editions. After the publication of this book and his retirement, he devoted himself to full-time research and writing. However, this coincided with serious illness and deterioration of his health. Despite this, he succeeded in producing two more books on journalism in English, The Press Under Siege (1992) and The Web of Censorship (1994). Mr. Niazi also compiled his Urdu writings on journalism in Hikayat-e-Khunchakan, Unglian Figar Apni and Baghbani-e-Sehra. He also published an anthology of Urdu fiction and poetry on the theme of peace under the title: Zameen Ka Noha. All these literary and academic works were pursued with utmost seriousness and commitment and were acclaimed by a vast readership.
