Forensic science encompasses a wide variety of scientific disciplines. Its foremost purpose is to offer unprejudiced, scientific support for use in courts of law. Scientific analysis of physical evidence is compulsory to assist the police in their investigations. These examinations include – detection of blood, semen, saliva, and other body fluids. Blood grouping from dried blood, or semen stains. Determination of origin of species from blood stains. Use of DNA profiling to compare the unidentified samples for the purpose of identification. Identification of trace elements like – fibers, hair (site and origin of species). Recognition and analysis of blood and urine samples in cases of consumption of drugs and alcohol in offences like driving under the effect of intoxication, or in cases of poisoning. Examination of glass fragments and paint samples by means of microscopic techniques as well as physical and chemical methods. Examination and analysis of skeletal material, intact or in fragmentary state, recovered from crime scenes to establish identity in terms of establishing age, sex, race, and stature, etc. Scientists work closely with police and on certain occasions they may even have to visit the scene of crime to get certain relevant information about the crime. The forensic scientists often give evidence in the court, which may be of great use. This book would be useful to Forensic Scientists working in State and Central Forensic Science Laboratories across the country as well as to the Law Institutes, Police Administration, Crime Investigation Agencies, Fingerprint Bureaus, Question Document Examiners and Chemical Examiners. ABOUT THE AUTHOR P.K. Janjua
Dr. Parveen K. Janjua (b. 1977) graduated in Science in 1998, obtained Masters degree in Forensic Science from the Punjab University, Patiala in 2000. He obtained his doctorate degree from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi in 2004. Dr. Janjua was awarded Junior Research Fellowship (2000) by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. Presently he is working as Co-ordinator I.F.S.C., Bundelkhand University, Jhansi.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ramesh Chandra
Dr. Ramesh Chandra is currently Principal Scientist & Head. Crop Improvement & Production Division at Central Institute for Sub Tropical Horticulture, Lucknow. He has over 30 years of experience in micropropagation, in vitro conservation & molecular biology of potato, mango, guava, papaya, litchi etc. he was instrumental in initiating & shaping potato biotechnology at Central Potato Research Institute. Shimla and initiated biotechnology research at CISH, Lucknow. Dr. Chandra has undergone tissue culture and molecular biology training at Peru, Phillippines and China as visiting scientist. He worked with John Dodds, Tissue Culture Specialist of International Potato Centre, Lima, Peru on potato micropropagation and in vitro germplasm management. He has almost 125 research publications including a book on Comprehensive Potato Biotechnology to his credit. Dr. Chandra has traveled widely and participated in various national and international conference. He is a life member of many scientific societies and fellow of Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding. He has successfully completed research projects funded by DBT, UPDASP, NATP and running five research projects funded by different agencies.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Surinder Nath
Prof. Surinder Nath (b.1945) graduated in 1965 and obtained post graduate in 1965 and obtained post graduate degree in Anthropology (with physical Anthropology as specialization) in 1967. He completed his Doctorate in 1972 from Delhi University and started teaching in 1975. He obtained specialized graining in Forensic Science at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory, C.B.I. New Delhi and taught Forensic Science besides Anthropology at Delhi University. He has published over ten books pertaining to various aspects of Anthropology and Forensic Science, including two books each on Forensic Anthropology and Fingerprint Identification.He has published over 130 research papers in various National and International journals. Twenty seven research scholars have obtained their Ph.D. degrees under his supervision and eight are enrolled with him for their doctorate.Professor Nath headed the Department of Anthropology during January 2005 to December 2007. He was Dean, Faculty of Science for a period of two and a half year during his headship. He was chairman of Standing Committee Besides being member of the Academic Council and Executive Council of Delhi University for three and two and a half year period. He is on the panel of Punjabi University, Patiala, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, GGS I.P. University, Delhi, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi and Amity University, Noida. He is member of the Academic Council of DDU Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur.At present he is working as senior professor in the department of Anthropology, University of Delhi.Specializations: Forensic Anthropology, Fingerprints Somatometry and Somatoscopy, Identification of skeletal remains Growth and development studies.
