The present work is an outcome of scholarly exercise done by the authors on the part of field analysis. This book is an enthusiastic attempt in exploring and highlighting the relationship between forest and tribals. Their relationship is called as Vannputra (Forest son).
The enthnographic details on content of the book have been explained in thirteen chapters excluding introduction and conclusion, In Chapter one to six-attempts have been made to present the cultural pattern of tribals residing in Pat region of Chotanagpur in the Bihar State. In these chapters material culture, social system, economic system, religious system and political system have been described in relation to forest, In the beginning, the forest scene in Indian context has also been furnished to make the description interesting.
In the next coming chapters, forest medicine, forest fodder, forest fuel, forest policies and forest movements have been analysed in details. Thus the book covers a wide range of informations on various aspects of forest and the tribals in Indian context, This book will be valuable for the scholars interested in the study of forest and the tribals.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ajit K. Singh
Ajit K. Singh is an University Professor at the Department of Anthropology, Ranchi University. He has written 7 books and more than a dozen research paper in reputed journals of India and abroad. He has travelled in Europe for academic assignments. Once he was a lecturer at North-Eastern Hill University, Shilong. He is also specialized in the field of social anthropology and in connection with development, religion, tribal demography and area studies, He has completed 4 mojor research projects sponsored by Ministry of welfare, Govt. of India Bihar Education Project Govt. of Bihar and Tribal Welfare Research Institute, Ranchi. He is also an action anthropologist and is closely associated with a number of social organisations.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gaya Pandey
Gaya Pandey (b. 1954) is a senior faculty in anthropology at Ranchi University, Ranchi (Jharkand) ever since his joining as faculty member in this institution (1985), he has been actively engaged in fieldwork, teaching and research. He has to his credit dozens of articles published in journals of national (Indian) Anthropology), Bhartiya Janajatiya Sanskriti ( Indian Culture), Tribal and Manav Shastriya Sidhanta: Shastriya and Adhunik ( Anthropological Theory: Classical and Modern).His books published under coauthorship include Sun Worship in India (1992), History of Anthropological Thought (1993), Manavshastriya Vicharak Ewam Vichardharayen (2000), Forest and Tribals (1997), Artisan Tribes of Bihar and Bengal (2001), Janajatiya Vikas (2001), Vikasatmak Manav Vigyan (2001), Tribal Development in India (2002), and Samajik Sanskritik Manav Shastra (2005).

Prabhat K. Singh is associated with the Department of Anthropology, Ranchi University, done his M. Sc. In Anthropology and Ph.D. from Ranchi University, His Ph.D. work was on Nature-Man-Spirit Complex of the Kurmis. He has published more than dozen articles in National and International journals. He has participated in many National and International Conferences. His field of interest in research cover, tribal and rural development and Environmental studies.
