ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.P. Das Gupta
Sivaprasad Das Gupta (b. 1923) matriculated from the university of Calcutta in the 1st division in 1941. He obtained M.Sc. Degree in Geography in the Ist Class, winning the Calcutta University medal and Prize in 1947. He specialized in the science of cartography geomorphology and human environment . Soon after passing M. Sc. He joined the University of Calcutta as its first Cartograher. In 1949, he was selected in the West Bengal State Education Service of the government of West Bengal, to teach Geography at the Presidency College, Calcutta, where he served as Assistant Professor of Geography till early 1957. He had to leave Presidency College, Calcutta, because his service was requisitioned by Ministry of Education of the Government of India, as Research Officer in the National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organisation. He finally headed the Organisation as its first full time Director till his final retirement in 1982 after completing some 34 years of service life, Professor S.P. Das Gupta authored and edited some, 50 volumes of scientific books, atlases, and scientific books, atlases, and scientific monographs. Is magnum opus had been the highly prestigious 8-volume National Atlas of India. Besides, he also brought out more than 165 research articles and scientific papers in geography, geomorphology, cartography and environmental sciences. Deeply interested in ancient Indian knowledge, cartography and environment sciences.
