Jayaprakash Narayan was a legendry figure of our time. His life is a remarkable story of an individual dedicated to the service of nation with unparalled courage and conviction. A revolutionary at heart, he acquired a high stature in public life without advocate of Socialism and Sarvodaya and a firm believer in democracy. His call for total revolution, the movement to save democracy against authoritarianism, ushered a new era in Indian politics. A prominent political thinker and social reformer, he added a new dimension to Indian polity and society. This volume is a tribute to his memory. The papers focus on some of the important areas of JP’s thought and action such as his concern for democracy and freedom, rural development, Panchayati Raj, land reforms as well as his relevance to the problems of the present India. It embodies the contributions of many scholars, which were presented at a seminar held at the A.N. Sinha Institute of Social Studies of which J.P. was the founder chairman for first ten years.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nil Ratan
Dr. Nil Ratan is Reader in Political Science at the A.N. Sinha Institute of Social Studies for over fourteen years. He has contributed to studies in several areas of development. He has produced a book and published several papers in edited volumes and Journals. He has visited U.S.A., U.K., France, Canada, Hong Kong, Afghanistan for lectures, seminars and conferences. He has been involved in several research projects sponsored by the world Bank, UNICEF, NHRC, Ministry of Labour, Government of India etc.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sachchidananda (ed.)
Prof. Sachchidananda, D. Lit., is one of the seniormost Anthropologists in India. He received his education from Patna University, and School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has taught at Patna University and New York University. He has held several important posts like Director, Bihar Tribal Welfare Research Institute, Ranchi; Director, A.N. Sinha Institute of Social Studies, Patna; and Vice-Chancellor, Ranchi University, Ranchi. Prof. Sachchidananda has contributed a large number of papers and book reviews to research journals in India and abroad, and published a number of books in Sociology and Anthropology. Important amontst which are : Culture Change in Tribal Bihar (1964), The Tribal Village in Bihar (1968), Social Dimension of Agricultural Development (1972), Tribal Voter in Bihar (1979), Elite and Development (1980), Industrialisation and Social Disorganisation (1985), Tradition and Development (1988), Shifting Cultivation in India (1989). A past President of the Anthropology Section of Indian Science Congress, Prof. Sachchindananda is the recipient of the R.P. Chandela Medal for distinguished work in Anthropology in 1982. He is associated with a number of social science research institutions in the country in an advisory capacity.
