This book was conceived and written with the view of providing the students and researcher with a concise text. It is still the shortest available text book of Indian Fresh-water Teleostean Fish musculature in general and giving full coverage of the Cephalic muscles of some Indian Fresh-water Fishes in particular. In this book much more stress has been laid to the functional aspects of the muscles of some fresh water teleosts in accordance to their use and function. Unfortunately the comparative study of the musculatures was given little attention in comparison to that of other organ system. The book is divided in to three parts. The first part of the book bearing chapter 1 to 4 deals with the functional anatomy of various muscles like eye muscles and myodome, osteology of branchial basket, branchial and hypobranchial muscles more particularly functional morphology of the cephalic muscles of some fresh water carps, siluroid and non-siluroid fishes. Second part of the book chapter 5 and 6 imparts light on the myomeric musculature and histophysiological and cytochemical analysis viz., SDH activity, localization of lipid and acid mucopolysaccaride of the test muscles. Last part of the books chapter 7 throws light on the phylogenetic inter-relationship and their evdolutionary significance in relation to their form and function.

Professor Datta Munshi has contributed significantly to the understanding of the structure, function and evolution of the air-breathing organs of Indian fresh-water teleostean fishes. His morphometric/stereological analyses of the bimodal respiratory system have indicated how changes in their relative development can be correlated with changes in the life pattern of the fish and seasonal characteristics of the environment. Prof: Munshi has been the recipient of British Council Visiting Lectureship (1971, 1977), INSA-Royal Society Exchange Program Visiting Scientist Under INSA/DF Germany Exchange Programme (1997), Polish exchange programme (1991), Rockefller Foundation Programme (1989), Nuffield Foundation and Smithsonian Foundation Visiting (1984, 87, 89,90,94) at University of Notre Dame, U.S.A.
