Among the fundamental; Books of Early Buddhism the Majjima Nikaya is next in importance to the Digha Nikaya translated as Dialogues of Buddha. The present reprint is the earliest translation of the Majjima Nikaya. Lord chalmers translators of the Majjima Nikaya after editing this published by the Pali text society, London began work on translation of this text. He also studies Buddha ghosa’s commentary for his work, which is evident from brief footnotes in the Book and presented before us in English 152 discourse of the Buddha. These discourses cover a wide range of subjects including the important biographical material on Gautam, the Buddha the Founder of Buddhism. Lord Chalmer’s in his introduction discusses the importance attached to asceticism in ancient India. He also briefly explains some fundamental tanets of Buddhism. This work also contains important notes and references on Buddhist terms & concepts.
