This book started in 1999 when a number of post-graduate students and the authors were putting together ideas about the Indian religious and the cultural vocabulary which was being used, or could be used, in the articulation of the Christian faith. The outcome of this sharing was formulated in short reflections which were published for over four years in the Vidyajyoti Journal of Theological Reflections, with the idea of making its reader familiar with at least some of these gems and, through them, to foster a deeper dialogue between the Indian religious traditions and the Christian faith. For these “gems†are words, each of which has a history, a life, a cultural setting that needs to be unpacked and understood.
