Gender Dimensions in Disaster Management aims to address the dearth of specific information on the subject of ‘gender issues in disasters’, particularly in the South Asian countries. This book is targetted at policy makers and development practitioners in South Asia, whose contribution is vital for effective disaster management and sustainable development in the sub-continent. The discussion of this book based on the fundamental arguments that: the risk posed by natural hazards is a variable, which has direct implications on development in general, and livelihoods in particular. Disaster risk management is part of ‘managing the livelihood’. The gender concerns experienced in the development context are applicable in the context of disasters, with an added weight. The specific vulnerabilities and capacities of men and women, and the gender/social dynamics of disaster-situations are often not obviously visible. Detailed livelihood analysis however, exposes these often subtle but vital considerations. If ignored these concerns will impede development efforts reaching their goals. In this guide, ITDG and its network of partners in South Asia, present their firm conviction that incorporating disaster risk into development planning, and addressing gender considerations is an absolute must to reach the goals of sustainable development and effective disaster risk reduction.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Madhavi Malalgoda Ariyabandu
Madhavi Malalgoda Ariyabundu is a development researcher with special interest on political economy of development and disasters. She has designed and coordinated a number of research and training initiatives on livelihood options in disaster risk reduction and gender issues in disaster; and has analyzed disaster management policies with special reference to South Asia. She has considerable experience in interacting with the communities living with disasters in South Asia. Madhavi authored the book 'Defeating Disasters: Ideas for Action', and co-authored the publications 'Disaster Communication, A Resource Kit for Media', and 'Disaster Risk Reduction in South Asia'. Madhavi is the 2004 recipient of the Mary Fran Myers Award, presented for 'advancing women's careers in emergency management and the academy and for promoting gendered disaster research', awarded by the Gender and Disaster Network (GDN) and the Natural Hazards Center, at the University of Colorado, USA. Madhavi is leading the Disaster Mitigation team at ITDG South Asia.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Maithree Wickramasinghe
Maithree Wickramasinghe is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of English, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, and a visiting lecturer on gender and women's studies at other educational institutions. Her research work has explored a number of diverse issues including sexual harassment and violence against women, feminist critical theory and methodology, gender in organizations and workplaces, women and development etc. She is the author of From Theory to Action - Women, Gender and Development published by Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, as well as a number of other studies and articles on gender and women's issues.
