The links between gender, population and development are complex and specific to historical and socio-cultural contexts. This volume seeks to probe deeper into these not easily recognizable connections between gender and development. It explores and illustrates, through theoretical reviews and empirical accounts, the powerful mediatory effect of gender relations in modifying or reinforcing gender biases. The papers in this volume have a specific thrust, linking gender with development through two distinct sets of conditions: individual endowments and structural constraints for gender equity. They examine the basis of gender discrimination and the policy perspectives rising therefrom. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Abusaleh Shariff
Dr. Abusaleh Shariff has been working as an Associate Professor in the Population Research Unit of the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore since 1985. He has a Ph.D. degree from the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, and a Master's degree in Economics from Bangalore University. He served as a member of the research staff in the India Population Project, Karnataka, between 1974 and 1980. Dr. Shariff has participated and presented several papers in many national and international seminars and conferences, and is author of a number of papers. His more recent works include 'Child Survival: Some Cultural Factors Associated with Morbidity and Mortality in South India', 'Human Organization' and 'The Changing Family System: Woman's Status and Fertility Decision Making.'
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ratna M. Sudarshan
Ratna M. Sudarashan is currently Principal Economist, Human Development Programme Area, National Council of applied Economic Research, New Delhi. She has a Master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Cambridge. She directs a programme of research on gender and informal economy concern, and works on education, the policy process and research-activists linkages.
