Geography of Well-Being of North East India, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the product of four of research under the UGC Major Research Project Scheme. North East India has always remained remote, isolated, neglected and under-developed, even after 56 years of independence. Dominated by tribal groups it is an area of constant conflict. Sikkim, due to its proximity to the North East and sharing similar historical, cultural and physical background has of late been linked to the North East in matters of planning and development. The relative inaccessible, tribal dominated Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been included in the study due to its similar physical characteristics and poor development record. The book purports to portray the variability in the distribution of needs vis-?-vis the availability of resources, social infrastructure and economic opportunities. The needs of the people are inconsistent and vary between individuals and communities. In short, it deals with “who gets what, where and howâ€. To derive at a meaningful conclusion on well-being, 83 parameters have been selected covering eleven broad groups or indicators viz., demographic characteristics, land use, education, health, housing, nutrition, agriculture, employment, economic infrastructure, basic infrastructure, accidents and crime. Each of these indicators has been discussed in separate chapters. The degree of correlation between the different parameters has been analyzed. Factor analysis has been performed to evaluate the relative importance of each parameter/indicator. Such thorough analysis has aided in the articulation of distinct paradigms. The book may suffice as a useful tool for future planning strategies.
