This book on geomagnetic perspectives of solid Earth and upper atmosphere presents various aspects of the Earth’s magnetic field.  Beginning with a treatise on the historical development of geomagnetism, topics covered in this book include the most recent advances in geophysical research on acquisition, reduction and analyses of data from geomagnetic observatory network, geophysical surveying and laboratory experiments.  The state-of-art geophysical techniques of gravity and magnetic field anomalies from ground, aeromagnetic and satellite data; EM induction of geomagnetic depth sounding, magnetotelluries and ocean-bottom magnetometry; global positioning system; tectonomagnetism and palaeoseismology in earthquake precursory used to probe the Earth’s interior are lucidly explained.  Description on the basic relationships between the Sun-Earth and space-weather using satellite, rockets and modern experimental results, besides application of palaeo, rock and environmental magnetic laboratory measurements for mapping plate movements towards understanding the Earth’s history and Earth processes, make this book a truly enlightening experience to the readers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nathani Basavaiah

Dr. Nathani Basavaiah is a well known geophysicist in India with significant contributors in the field of Environmental Magnetism.  His pioneering works on satellite-based geopotential field anomalies, applied rock magnetism as well as environmental magnetism, brought him many laurels including the British Council Fellowship (1994-95), European Research Fellowship (1999) and Alexander con Humboldt Research Fellowship (1998-2000).  He is a visiting scientist at the University of Tubingen and also worked at the GeoForschungsZentrum, Potsdam, Germany.  He is currently engaged in studies on climate change, environmental pollution and palaeoclimate reconstruction.  His studies are based on multi-proxy evidences form sediment cores from lakes, deserts, loess and offshore zones.  He has established a well-equipped state-of-the-art Environmental Magnetism Laboratory and trained many students and scientist in this modern technology.  Dr. Badavaiah has published more than 45 scientific publications and edited a special volume on ‘Environmental Magnetism and Palaeomonsoons’ prior to writing this textbook.  At present, he is Professor and Head of the Environmental Magnetism Group at the Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG), India.
