The book ‘Geomorphology and Environment’ contains 34 articles written by eminent scholars from India and abroad. Many of them are internationally reputed while the others are young budding geographers. The articles covers a wide field of geomorphology and environment. The papers have been categorized into three subsections. The first section is applied geomorphology which contains 19 articles and covers glacial, fluvial, Aeolian, coastal, mountain and gully landscapes, extreme events as well as hydrological aspects. Theoretical geomorphology has been put in the second section which contains 2 articles on cyclic concept and complexity in geomorphology. The third and last section is on environmental issues which includes 13 articles covering flood hazard, geoinformatics for environmental justice, wetland, biodiversity, transport, tourism, EIA etc.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR H S Sharma
Dr. H.S. Sharma (b. January 05.1945) is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Geography, University of Rajasthan. He did his M.A. in 1966 and Ph. D in 1970 on "Physiography of Lower Chambal Valley and its Agricultural Development" from Sagar University. He joined the department of Geography, Rajasthan University in 1969 as a Lecturer. He served as the Principal of Rajasthan College; Director of Indira Gandhi Center for Human Ecology, Environmental and Population Studies, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, University of Rajasthan (2001-2004). At present, he is the Director of the Academic Staff College, University of Rajasthan. In his career Prof. Sharma has published 16 books, 75 research articles in different national and international journals and supervised 45 Ph.D. dissertations. Prof. Sharma has been on academic visits to the UK, the USA, Germany, Norway and Canada. He was honoured with the UGC Career Award in 1979 and IESSR Best Scientist Award in 2000. He was the President of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) for 2001-2002.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Savindra Singh
Dr. Savindra Singh (b. July 10, 1944) is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Geography, Allahabad University. He did his M.A. in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1978 on 'A geomorphotogical study of small drainage basins of Ranchi plateau' He joined the Department of Geography, Allahabad University in 1966 as a Lecturer. In his career Prof Singh has published 10 books, 75 research articles in different national and international journals and supervised 25 Ph.D. dissertations. He has been on academic visits to the U.K., Germany and Netherlands. He was honoured with the K.N. Bhal Science Award by U.P. govt. in 1971 and 1976 and the U.P. Hindi Snasthan Award in 1993. He has been the Secretary of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) since its inception in 1986.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sunil Kumar De
Dr. Sunil Kumar De (b. December 28, 1965) is a Lecturer in Geography, Union Christian Training College, Berhampore, West Bengal. He did his M.Sc. in 1989 and Ph.D. in 1999 on 'A study of the fluvial dynamics of the River Balasan' from the University of Calcutta. In his career Dr. De has published One Book, 14 research papers in different national and International journals and visited Japan, Austria, Germany and Bangladesh in connection with conferences, workshops and invited lectures. He has been active member of the Executive Committee and the International Correspondent of the Indian Institute of Geomorphologists (IGI) since 2003.
