This book is the translation of the Hindi book “Lokpriya Gita†written by my respected uncle, the late Shri Gopal Lal Barman. My uncle was blessed to spend part of his life in the holy company of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave. With the blessings of Pujya Swami Brahmrupanandji of the Vedanta Society, and my uncle and with prayers to Lord Krishna, I would like to dedicate this English version of the Gita to all the young men and women of the world. The Gita is a holy book, an immortal message that emanated from the lotus lips of Lord Krishna himself. The teachings and philosophy of the Gita are universal, eternal and for all human beings. As my uncle, Shri Gopal Lal Barman has written in his introduction, “Gita gives us the solution to mankind’s day to day and social problems… Be free from jealousy and do your duty “dharmaâ€; practise detachment; help others; try to free yourself from the fruit of results of actions; work proficiently, devoid of success and failure. Be friendly to others; be tranquil and all times… take shelter in God.†To comprehend the Gita’s message is simple and true, the Gita is full of wisdom. In the last two centuries, various scholars, philosophers, teachers and saints have written and commented on the Gita. This translation of the work of Shri Gopal Lal Barman is primarily for young adults and students in modern times so that they may understand with examples the simple and true message of the Gita and try to practise it in their daily living. Spiritual awareness and awakening as preached in the Gita elevates man’s perception who then sees his existence as one and the lord in all of us. As my teacher always says – Arise (wake up), realize and reflect. I hope this book will be able to fulfil this objective by helping the young realize their true, divine and spiritual nature and ultimately the truth within us. “Take me from evil to good, from darkness to light from death to immortality, let there be peace everywhere.â€
