This book studies the efforts made by two great powers – USA and former USSR now Russia towards nuclear disarmament since 1960s till the present times. The book focuses only on the strategic nuclear weapons reduction. Therefore, it deals with the bilateral treaties concerning strategic nuclear weapons. Perhaps, for the first time, all the treaties about limitation and reduction of SNW have been put together – from SALT I 1972 to SORT 2002. The treaties included are SALT I and II, START I and II which have been analysed in details and START III, IV and proposals and the latest SORT have been included in this book. The objective of this study is to understand how the efforts of two big powers toward strategic nuclear disarmament could eventually lead to global security, what were the problem encountered by them in the process and what prospects these efforts had in moving towards the goal of global security. The book will be extremely useful to the scholars and practitioners of international politics and defense studies.
