ABOUT THE AUTHOR Richard F. Burton
Sir Richard F. Burton (1821-90) did his higher education from Oxford. In 1842 he came to India and joined the Bombay Native Army. He made himself proficient in Oriental languages and studied Muhammadan life and customs thoroughly. In 1853 he made the pilgrimage to Mecca in disguise without being detected and wrote a full account of it. His other published works include: translation of Arabian Nights; Footsteps in E. Africa; Book of the Sword; Vikram and the Vampire; Goa and the Blue Mountains; A Grammar of teh Multani Langauge.
