Adopting an inter-disciplinary approach, this book provides an in-depth understanding of why Indian NGOs run by women for women, tend to be successful. Based on first-hand observations spanning five years and interviews with 20 founders of NGOs, this book explores the factors that motivate and facilitate women entrepreneurship in the development sector. It examines the organizational structures that have evolved based on feminist ideology and the services provided (e.g. self-help groups and micro-finance). The authors also discuss the social impact of these NGOs in promoting both development and women’s empowerment. They show how small NGOs are particularly effective in garnering support from the grass-roots and in tapping the knowledge base of local communities. Overall, the authors find that women entrepreneurs act as facilitators with a unique leadership style and that they encourage community-based movements grounded in local issues. As a result, these NGOs are successfully changing the landscape of rural poverty in India while ushering in sustainable development. This book will be of relevance to NGOs and funding agencies, as well as to students and researches engaged in development studies, women’s studies, entrepreneurship and poverty studies. Femida Handy is Associate Professor at the School of Social Policy and Practice, University of Pennsylvania, and at the Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University. She was awarded the ARNOVA and Sage Publishers' Award for Outstanding Article in 1996 for her article that appeared in the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly as well as the award by ARNOVA for the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation written in Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Journal of Comparative Economic, Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics and the Journal of Community Practice. She has also co-authored (with R.A. Cnaan, S.C. Boddie, G. Yarcey and R. Schneider), The Invisible Caring Hand: Congregations and the Provisions of Welfare (2002).

Meenaz Kassam is Assistant Professor, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto and American University of Sharjah. She is also Director, Chinmaya Organization for Rural Development, Hamilton, Canada. Dr. Kassam has published articles in various journals such as Nonprofit Management and Leadership, Social Development Issues, Pakistan Journal of Women's Studies and The Canadian Journal of Sociology. She has authored Immigrants from Pakistan: A Cultural Profile (1998), part of a series commissioned by the Ministry of Immigration and Citizenship, Government of Canada.

Suzanne Feeney is Director, Institute for Nonprofit Management and an associate Professor at the Hatfield School of Government, Portland State University. She is a past President of the Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC) and past Vice President of the Association for Research and Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Associations (ARNOVA). Dr. Feeney has been the recipient of two Civic Engagement Awards from Portland State University and from the Albina Ministerial Alliance (an African-American community organization). She has published in many journals including the Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly and the Yale Case Study Series.
