Gujaratis in Britain

The book presents information on the Gujaratis in Britain, covering aspects from the first arrival of Gujaratis there, which can be traced to the seventeenth century, to the Gujarati media in Britain—their use of publications and electronic networks. Pointing out that the political and economic interest in the diaspora is not matched by a systematic theoretical and historical interest in it in India, it deals with how the different Indian communities in that country have followed their own paths of development. It provides details on the community of Gujaratis: their surnames, places of worship, language and literature, charity, hospitality and role in public life. Showcasing Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s 1931 trip to Britain, it discusses the achievers among the Gujaratis in Britain.
