For the first time in India a long felt need of writers for a comprehensive handbook dealing with the topics of interest to writers, publishers, editors, artists and journalists has been fulfilled by the publication of a Handbook for Indian Writers. In many countries various organisations and technical tools have been developed to help established writers, and new entrants. These take the form of Literary Associations, Writers’ Societies, Literary Agents and Agencies, Guidance Bureaus, Translation, Indexing, and Book Review Syndicates, Clipping Bureaus, and a collection of highly useful writers’ manuals. In India these agencies are now coming into form. This Handbook which contains information about all these agencies and about a number of useful topics of interest is a first step in this direction. As you note from the contents, Handbook is divided into two parts. Part I includes articles on topics of interest to writers and editors. Part II is a reference section, based on information collected through questionnaires from publishers, editors, writers, authors, societies, government agencies, etc. and compiled from the world reference books. It comprises of nine sections including six appendices. The sections are devoted to Indian publishers; Indian journalists; who’s who of Indian writers; societies and institutions of interest to writers, journalists and artists; literary news and press agencies; literary prizes and awards; agencies which provide facilities for translation, clippings, indexing, editing; a list of important books which writers can consult; and a calendar of events providing important information about landmarks, selected notable Indians, festivals, national days, etc.
