This handbook presents a concise but thorough overview of state-of-the-art technology for pollution control processes. It will be of interest to those engineers, consultants, educators, architects, planners, government officials, industry executives, attorneys, students and others concerned with solving environmental problems. The pollution control processes are organized into chapters by broad problem areas, and appropriate technology for decontamination, destruction, isolation, etc. for each problem area is presented. Since many of these technologies are useful for more than one problem area, a specific technology may be included in more than one chapter, modified to suit the specific considerations involved. Those of you interested in a broad view of any specific technology should consult the process index. The pollution control processes described are those that are actively in use today, as well as those innovative and emerging processes that have good future potential. An important feature of the book is that advantages and disadvantages of many processes are cited. Also, in many cases, regulatory-driven trends are discussed, which will impact the technology used in the future. Where pertinent, regulations are discussed that relate to the technology under consideration. Regulations are continually evolving, frequently requiring modified or new treatment technologies. This should be borne in mind by those pursuing solutions to environmental problems. Innovative and emerging technologies are discussed in less detail than the technology now in use: however, it is important to consider these new processes carefully, due to increasingly tighter regulatory restrictions. For some pollutants specific treatment levels must be obtained; however, for other pollutants, specific treatment methods may be required. All regulations mentioned in this book are on the Federal level only. State regulations could require different treatment standards. Although regulations are mentioned throughout the book, no legal or technical advice is intended, and anyone investigating a hazardous waste problem should obtain appropriate legal and technical guidance.
