In the Service of Library, the consumer is the user; the commodity served is systematised knowledge-that is, subject; and the distributor of the commodity is the library profession. To perform this work efficiently, the library profession should acquire some knowledge of commodities to be served that is the Universe of Subjects, particularly its development, structure and the interrelation among the subjects. Such a study is, in fact, the necessary implication of the Five Laws of Library Science. Learning the structure and development of the Universe of subjects-that is, the patterns of subjects and their mode of development-has helped the researchers in the formulation of the methodology for the design of the schemes of classification in particular and for research in library and information science in general.
