This volume contains eight articles on health, forest development and environment in three sections. The first article in Section 1 covers socio-cultural dimensions of health, relation between environment and health, interaction of traditional and modern health care systems and tribal medicine. The second article emphasizes the need to develop traditional knowledge and wisdom instead of replacing it. The third article examines development of medical anthropology in India. In Section II, the first article examines colonial and post colonial forest policy, importance of forest in tribal economy, social forestry programmes and promotion of commercial interest at the cost of tribals in the new afforestation policy. The second article describes how national and international agencies influenced tribal policy. Tribals’ rights were not respected. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Buddhadeb Chaudhuri
Buddhadeb Chaudhuri (b. 1943) holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree in Anthropology from Calcutta University. He also received the prestigious Premchand Roychand Scholarship from the Calcutta University. He has numerous published papers in journals and edited books and has fifteen books to his credit. He was also invited to edit an international publication, based on papers presented in a workshop which he attended in Vietnam, published from Bangkok. He was a Senior Fellow of ICSSR and Fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla. He was also a Visiting Fellow in Helsinki University and a Visiting Professor in Warsaw University, Poland. He has already completed a number of research projects received from different sources like ICSSR, UGC, Govt. of India, UNICEF etc. Indo-Dutch Programme on Alternatives in Development has sponsored his cross-cultural study on Development and Environment with reference to forests in South and South-East Asia. He has also initiated a few development programmes particularly for the tribals besides being connected with a number of organizations devoted to development. He participated and organized many National / International Seminars in India and abroad. He has conducted field work in different countries of South and South-East Asia. As a member of an International three-member study team, sponsored by Swiss Red Cross, Prof. Chaudhuri participated in the project identificatioin mission in Bangladesh during October-November, 1991 to study the post-April, 1991 Cyclone situation.
