The market of higher education worldwide is in a state of flux and transformation. It has become increasingly international over the past decade dominated by significant private sector participation. Such liberalized attempt at least in a few sectors of higher education has definitely made the market competitive not only in terms of service quality and price but also in terms of student accessibility and eligibility. Changing profile of students, proliferation and rising need of distance education, an inclination towards professional courses, and utility of education in increasing employability are some of the major forces driving higher education market in the modern era. Today’s students are consumers looking for quality of service and recognition, access and equity, financing and cost, building of intellectual capital and capacity as well as policy coherence. The book “Higher Education – Emerging trends†focuses on issues such as above. It also takes into consideration the recent policy implications such as implementation of GATS requirement, which comprises service sectors including education. The book starts with the evolution of higher education market since the British period in India and takes the reader through gradual changes that have happened in this sector over the last six decades. It also highlights the major trends observed in the field of higher education. The articles included in the book make the reader aware of the changes which are underway in the higher education sector and will hopefully raise many an issue for policy makers to ponder over and take a final call on.
