Hinduism and Christianity in India is a sociological exploration of the impact of religion on the two communities (Tangkhuls and Meiteis) of Manipur. The primary focus of the study is to examine the process of conversion of Tangkhuls into Baptist Sect of Protestant Christianity, and Meiteis into Vaishnavites sect of Hinduism. The social, political, educational and economic impact of these two alien religions on the two communities has been analysed on the basis of empirical data. The study finds that the coming in of Vaishnavites of Hinduism and Baptist Sect of Protestant Christianity in Manipur has brought a profound transformation in the Manipuri Society. Due to influence of Hinduism, the Brahmanical social order of caste hierarchy emerged in the casteless society of Meiteis and Tangkhuls. The book also analyses how the acceptance of two different religious beliefs by Tangkhuls and Meiteis has influenced their world views and relationship with the people outside the state. One also could find due to differences in degree of social mobility occupational structure, one could also find impact of the two religions on other Manipuri Communities. The book is an important study on the impact of religion on the traditional tribal societies in Manipur in particular and India in general. Thus, it will be helpful to those students who are interested in the study of sociology of Hinduism and Christianity in India. It is also useful in the context of recent controversy regarding religious conversions in India. This book will give a clear picture on how the conversion to a different religion results in different social, economic and political developments in a region.
