Eastern India, comprising the modern states of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, shares a broad geographical features. The region witnessed emergence of man and his culture as early as in the middle pleistocene period, and has ever since made progressive changes (as evidenced by the discovery of different elements of stone age culture) over time and space, finally led to the development of many important early urban centres. Despite the tremendous amount of potentialities, the region, particularly the eastern part of eastern India, virtually remained a marginal area of research. The first excavation of palaeolithic site was conducted at Kuliana in Mayurbhanj by N.K. Bose and D. Sen in 1948, but the work was not followed up seriously by subsequent scholars. However fortunately in recent years, this region has received the attention of many young scholars.
