The production of histories of India has become very frequent. Reasons are obvious. The changes in the Indian scene require a re-interpretation of the facts. The attitudes of historian about the essential elements of Indian history has also changed. The new discoveries and revelations caused by opening of archives or the release of private papers has necessitated rewriting of history. This series of volumes on history of modern India attempts at introducing some of the major themes in modern Indian history in the process of investigating the origins of India’s independence, while lie in the historical processes of interaction both within India and in the circumstances of alien incustions. Object in writing these volumes is to make available to our readers text books for graduate and post-graduate levels of various universities in India and abroad on the modern Indian history. Special feature of this exercise is a cross section of essays written both by prominent progressive and other historians on various topics of the modern Indian history. This should enable them to draw their own conclusions with regard to the problems and events of the history. We have also made an attempt to include important events and appended Indian constitutional documents to facilitate the readers for better understanding and for conducting further research on the subject.
