This history covers the time from pre-Islamic Arabia to 1939 and the whole stretch of Islamic settlement from Morocco in the West to China in the East, and from the Mongols in the North to the Islamized tribes of Central Africa. In covering so large a subject it is no small feat to have produced a work which can be wholeheartedly recommended to Islam. The author has seen clearly the salient points in the long story of the spread and development of Islam, and has woven his account around these points in a way that lets the reader see a clear picture of each epoch in advance. In its historical sense, its mastery of the results and clarity of presentation, it is infinitely superior to any of the more recent attempts. The author has always endeavoured, and has very generally succeeded, in giving an impartial judgment on points where the opinions of scholars differ sharply.
