The vast literature that has grown in the west around the concept of rights is in itself an indication that the concept had to be defended and philosophically justified. In the long history of the Indian Civilization, the freedom of thought and speech, the freedom of one’s life in the light of one’s beliefs, the freedom of association, and the freedom of public debate between the contending philosophical schools were taken to be the natural foundations of human relationships.
