This book discusses the place of women in the Indian police force. It discusses issues such as whether women have made any serious contribution to the police force or not. Their role, equation with their male counterparts and their career prospects are under study in this book. Gender issues that exist in the Delhi Police are treated in great detail here, besides discrimination, violence and harassment experienced by policewomen. This book is the result of first-hand interactions with men and women in the police force in Delhi with their responses. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jaya Indiresan
Dr. Jaya Indiresan obtained her Ph.D. in Organisational Behaviour from IIT, Delhi. She was formerly Professor of Higher Education at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, New Delhi. She also taught at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and at the Technical Teacher's Training Institute, Chennai. She has been a visiting Professor at the University of Manitoba, Canada, and a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan, USA. She is currently a freelance consultant to several organisations and Advisor, Asian Centre for Organisation Research and Development. Her areas of interest are facilitating institution building and human resource development, with special reference to women. She has designed and conducted several executive development programs. A case in example is an in-house executive development programme designed and conducted by her for the entire faculty of Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius. She has contributed to several research publications and has many articles and books to her credit. She is the author of the book "Education for Women's Empowerment: Gender Positive Initiatives in Pace Setting Women's Colleges", based on a National Study. She has co-authored the book "Institutionalisation of Innovations in Higher Education."
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Karuna Chanana
Dr. Karuna Chanana was formerly Professor of Sociology of Education at the Zakir Husain Centre for Educational Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She has been Senior Fellow of the Indian Council of Social Science Research and Fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library, New Delhi. She was the first recipient of the Women and Development Award of Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, New Delhi. Currently, she is a member of the Regional Scientific Committee for Asia and the Pacific, UNESCO Forum on Higher Education, Research and Knowledge, UNESCO, Paris. She has written two papers on the gendered impact of globalisation on higher education in India, which have been accepted for publication by UNESCO. She has been researching on gender related issues for the past three decades. She has published several articles in national and international research journals. A notable book edited by her is "Socialisation, Education and Women: Explorations in Gender Identity," Orient Longman. She has authored the book, "Interrogating Women's Education: Bounded Visions, Expanding Horizons," Rawat Publications, Jaipur. Her most recently edited book is "Transformative Links between Higher and Basic Education," Sage Publications.
