History is the mirror of a society, which shows us our real face. In it we see our present through past and get warned about future. It is a laboratory which proves things right or wrong for a civilization. A lot can be learnt by reading history between the lines. The history of India, for the purpose of study and to bring out more clearly the forces, trends and institutions that have shaped history at any given point and time, has been divided into the Ancient, Medieval & Modern periods. However there was never a complete break from the earlier period but certain old institutions ceased to exist while others started acquiring new shapes. The physical features of a country have an important bearing on historical developments. Human progress depends a lot on human ability to control and overcome the vagaries of nature. Variations in soil, topography, rainfall and climate have created a number of distinct and different regions, with their separate characteristics and identities. Writing History (read correct history) is not an easy task. It involves the reflective approach and sense of time for an exercise of compression. Hopefully this work should prove to be beneficial for scholars as a ready reference and for students to have a feel of entire history of their country and of course for the general readers.
