Those challenging for the liberalisation and globalisation have begun to question the role and importance of the state. Yet the state cannot be wished away nor can it be truly relegated to the background. While it continues to remain extremely strong in communist countries like China, even in free societies like India, it is needed to ensure economic and social justice. The policy of economic liberalisation, introduced in India after the ‘balance of payment’ crisis in 1991 has strongly brought into focus the failure of state planning. It is extremely ironical that the Indian state, notwithstanding its proclamation of welfare state, became a prime example of the adequacy of the state of ensure this type of justice. This book attempts to understand the reasons behind the failure and emphasises the need for the state to reinvent itself, not only to regain its lost credibility, but also to ensure that new economic order becomes a socially responsive one.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ajay Saksena

Dr. Ajay Saksena is presently working as a Reader, Department of Political Science, D.A.V. (PG) College, Dehradun since 1989. he has specialized in the fields of International Relations in general and South Asian region area in particular. He has done International Training in the field of Conflict Resolution. Presently he is working on a UGC project on “Regional Integration as a means of Conflict Resolution: A Case Study of South Asia”. Earlier he has written a book “India and Pakistan: Areas of Agreement”. He has presented a number of papers in national and international conferences in India and abroad.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Pushpa Bisht

Dr. Pushpa Bisht is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, L.D. Arts College, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. She has had an academic career of distinction. Her doctoral thesis on the relevance of economic liberalization in India has been widely appreciated. Her areas of interest are Political Economy and International Relations. In the past she has been associated with “The Himachal Times” as a columnist. She has written widely on social issues and is currently working on a project entitled “Globalisation and Regionalism: Reconciling and Irreconcilable.”
