ABOUT THE AUTHOR S. Venkitaramanan
Mr. S Venkitaramanan, former Governor of Reserve Bank of India, has had a distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service. He has been a policy-maker and decision-maker at the highest levels in the central and state governments. He was finance secretary to the Government of India before becoming the Governor of the RBI. India's first set of economic reforms was initiated when he was in the central government. The Government of India initiated major economic reforms under finance minister Dr. Manmohan Singh's leadership where S Venkitaramanan was Governor of RBI. His distinguished career includes leadership responsibilities at the highest levels in India's private sector and a tenure of three years in the World Bank. He is on the boards of directors of some of India's largest companies and financial institutions. His extraordinary analytical, decision-making, policy-making and leadership skills play a vital role in their governance. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Physics from Kerala before joining the Indian Administrative Service in 1953. He studied at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, while on a sabbatical, and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Administration in 1968. Mr. S Venkitaramanan has been a columnist for The Hindu Business Line since its maiden issue in 1994. His analytical articles are known for their contextual relevance and their consistent emphasis on managerial effectiveness and excellence. His recent comments on the national economy, India's fiscal and monetary policies, and the accomplishments of India's leaders in the public and private sectors are included in this collection drawn from articles published in The Hindu Business Line (HBL).
