Indian economy statistical yearbook, in its current edition, has been updated on the basis of data that have become available since the publication of the last edition. Other relevant and necessary updating has also been an integral part of the annual revision and has been done with as much care as possible. We continue to reproduce the chapter that was added in the last edition to mark the fiftieth year of independence. Divided into sixteen sections, the yearbook portrays in facts and figures the process of development and modernisation of the country’s economy since independence. The statistical picture of the economy presents inter-temporal, inter-regional as well as inter-country comparisons. The economy-wide magnitudes are supplemented with those relating to various sectors and states. The vast expanse of data presented here are expected to serve the needs of a large number of teachers, business managers and analysts, legislators, journalists, research workers as well as serious students of the Indian economy. By leaving the analysis and interpretation of data to the users, the yearbook gives vast scope for presenting a wide variety of view-points on the successes and failures as well as remedial measures for the varied problems facing the country’s economy. As a record of the Indian economy in facts and figures, the yearbook has already carved out a niche for itself in the book-shelves of a large number of readers engaged in various spheres. In its present new format, it will be found still more useful by all those, both in India and abroad, who are concerned with and are interested in understanding the problems and performance of the country’s economy. By adding to each table the source of data, the book carries the imprint of the authenticity.
