Written from all Indian perspective the present book provides a vivid picture of invaluable contribution of the people of Murshidabad district in India’s struggle for freedom. The book, which is based mainly on primary sources, has removed a misconception that there is no political consciousness among the people of this district and they did not play any remarkable role in the country’s national movement. It has focused the district’s pioneering role in the country’s liberation movement. Through his painstaking research work of several years the author has very successfully unearthed new facts which have historically established the district’s glorious role in India’s struggle for freedom. Though the book has been prepared for the period from 1905 to 1947, indepth study has also been done on the period before 1905 and a full chapter is dedicated for the same. This chapter also reveals many hitherto unknown facts which prove to be very significant in the history of India’s freedom movement. The narrative from 1905 to 1947 has made it amply clear that district and witnessed the participation in the freedom movement of exceptional individuals as well as persons ranging from the upper middle class to the common people. The author has used all the relevant works on the subject and at the same time has taken evidence from records of intelligence branch, archives, jails, police stations, district record rooms, etc. Contemporary press, journals, magazines, local literatures, documents from personal collections, etc. have also been thoroughly used. The book is, in fact, a narrative of events which had actually occurred and which would speak directly to the readers. It is really a mine of information which can be used by the present and future researchers as a source book.
