India has continuous and cumulative intellectual traditions in many domains of knowledge. this tradition has its beginning in the Rgveda, the first attested Indo-European document, and continues to be alive in the life, practices and learning of the Indian people. The power and pertinence of knowledge systems in this tradition are attested by the existence of innumerable texts and thinkers that continue to b e the subject of study in major contemporary universities round the world. Not many today are aware of this rich heritage of thought. The academy therefore produces rootless young minds that at best are ignorant and at worst have contempt for their own traditions of thought. The two volumes, comprising 34 articles by distinguished scholars, expound some major Indian knowledge systems viz. Logic, Philosophy of Language, Technology and Crafts, Polity and Governance, Ethics and Sociological texts, Architecture, Poetics and Aesthetics, Law and Justice, Mathematics and Astronomy, Agriculture, Trade and Commerce and Medicine and Life Science. Under its seven sections- Indian Knowledge systems (Ex) Positions, Science, Medical Science in India, Psychology, Polity and Sociological Texts, Aesthetics and Poetics, Philosophy, logic and Language, and knowledge Formation, Dissemination and Practice- it makes available the first statements that articulate their validity for the contemporary Indian and Western reality.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Avadhesh Kumar Singh
Avadesh Kumar Singh (1960-) is Vice Chancellor, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University since August 1, 2006. Prior to the present assignment, he was Professor and head, Dept. of English and Comparative Literary Studies, Saurashtra University, Rajkot; and Coordinator, University Grants Commission (UGC) Special Assistance Programme (SAP) /DRS) on "Indian Renaissance Literature with Special reference to English, Gujarati and Hindi". The areas of his interest include Indian and Western literacy theories, comparative literature, Indian literature and translation, Indian literature and translation studies on which he has published 10 books and more than 75 papers in various journals and anthologies of academic repute. Indian Knowledge Systems, 2 vols. (2005) and Discourse of resistance in the colonial Period (2005) are among his last publications. Also he has delivered Keynote Addresses to many national and international seminars. He is the editor of critical Practice, a journal of literary and critical studies since 1994.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kapil Kapoor
Kapil Kapoor (b. 1940) is Professor of English, Centre for Linguistics and English, and Concurrent Professor, Special Centre for Sanskrit Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was Dean of the School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies, JNU, from 1997-1999 and Rector of the University from 1999-2002. His teaching and research interests include literary and linguistic theories - both Indian and Western, philosophy of language, nineteenth century British life, literature and thought, and Indian intellectual traditions. He has been lecturing on these themes and has written extensively on them. He has been teaching for almost forty-five years now. Literary Theory - Indian Conceptual Framework (1998); Canonical Texts of Literary Criticism (1995); Language, Literature and Linguistics - The Indian Perspective (1994); and South Asian Love Poetry (1994) and Text and Interpretation in the Indian Tradition (2005)are among his publications.
